NAM urged the UN to make the protection of peacekeeping staff a top priority
“The Non-Aligned Movement is deeply concerned about the large number of deaths of peacekeeping personnel in recent years, and urges the Secretariat and other interested parties to make the safety and security of United Nations peacekeeping staff a top priority.”, said the Venezuelan diplomat.
Ramírez highlighted the need to act in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, as well as with the principles for the establishment of said missions. To NAM it is essential to respect the sovereign equality, political independence, territorial integrity of the States, and the non-interference in the internal affairs.
Moreover, he stated that the General Assembly has the function within the United Nations system of formulating concepts, policies, and budgetary questions related to peacekeeping, within the Special Committee for Peacekeeping Operations, also known as C-34.
“That is why NAM reiterates that the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations is the only United Nations forum that has the mandate of comprehensively considering the issue of United Nations peacekeeping operations in all their aspects, and that the role of the Committee continues to have great importance in the process of drawing up strategic recommendations.”
The Venezuelan diplomat explained the importance of including the troop-contributing States in these missions, with the purpose to be part of the decision-making process and ensuring a triangular work between the troop-contributing countries, the UN secretariat, and the Security Council.
In his national capacity, Ramirez affirmed that the resolution of conflicts must be addressed from within a peaceful and political approach that guarantees the wellbeing of the peoples.
"United Nations, now, in the 21st Century and for the third millennium, should focus all of its efforts, to the utmost, on moral, intellectual, scientific, social, cultural, economic and financial order, in the fight against the demons of hunger, poverty and death that scourge our planet."
"We will take with us to the UN a voice that repudiates terrorism and speaks out in favour of world peace; that respects the sovereignty of peoples and has the credit of the 181 countries who voted for us, not as an imperialist power that conquers peoples, but with our Bolivarian vision of peace and the right to exist."
"We must speak clearly and firmly on this point: during the United Nations’ 70 years of existence, the Palestinian people have faced a constant lack of respect for the most basic rights, and it is shameful that this organisation has known about the situation since it was founded and to date no political solution to the conflict has been reached"
"Venezuela will now, more than ever, be an active voice in the defence of the sovereign equality of nations; in particular of the inalienable rights of the peoples of the South to development and peace"
